The Memory of Clay
My connection with ceramics began during my university years and gradually evolved into a creative journey that became central to my life. After completing my education in ceramics, I have been working in this field for about 10 years. In my studio, Mery Handmade Seramik in Kütahya, I shape each piece by hand through a careful and unhurried process.
My production process is based on rhythm rather than speed. Clay does not accept haste. What begins with the first touch develops through shaping, resting, drying, and firing. Each stage demands its own time. For this reason, rather than controlling the form entirely, I often allow the material to guide me. This approach gives each piece its own unique character.
Time spent in the studio is not only about production, but also about a space for quiet reflection. Within repetitive movements, details become more visible; sometimes a surface texture, sometimes an unintentional mark becomes the starting point of a new piece.
A large part of my inspiration comes from nature: surfaces shaped by the wind, traces left by water, the layered structure of earth, and its natural tones. Alongside this, my interest in flowers and animals also plays an important role in my work. I enjoy reflecting these living and delicate aspects of nature into my forms, sometimes directly, sometimes in a more intuitive way. This creates a sense of calmness as well as vitality in my pieces.
Each piece that emerges carries its own unique character. Hand marks, surface textures, and the unexpected effects of the kiln are all integral parts of this language of making. Details that might be seen as imperfections often define the identity of the work.
For me, ceramics is not a finished process, but an ongoing journey. I value that each piece I create becomes part of a living space, forming not only a visual but also an emotional connection. Each one leaves a quiet yet lasting trace wherever it exists.
