Doors/Gates and their technology
Energy efficiency as trend topic in door and gate industry / Diverse solutions at R+T 2024
The Doors/Gates area is a key pillar of R+T and will once again find a home from 19 to 23 February 2024 in the Alfred Kärcher Halle (Hall 8) and the Paul Horn Halle (Hall 10). Numerous well-known companies will impress visitors to the world’s leading trade fair for roller shutters, doors/gates and sun shading systems with their innovative products and services, with which the high requirements of the market can be met. There is a demand for sustainable solutions for the resource-friendly use of energy, in particular.
“Our member companies can hardly wait to showcase their innovations at the upcoming R+T 2024”, reports Kai-Uwe Grögor, President of BVT – Verband Tore (National Federation of Door and Gate Manufacturers). “Due to the current situation in relation to climate change and the higher energy prices, the topic of energy saving also plays a decisive role for the door and gate industry.” To that effect, visitors can already look forward to diverse, user-friendly solutions. “The insulation of building components is extremely important overall – and, by extension, the doors and gates”, adds Kai-Uwe Grögor. This is particularly interesting for solutions that are integrated in the thermal building envelope. Optimised opening and closing times also play a key role when it comes to avoiding energy losses. “A lot has also been accomplished here in recent years”, says Kai-Uwe Grögor. It also gets exciting in the Smart Home area with whose help doors/gates can be used very comfortably.
Time is energy
Alpha Deuren is one of the exhibitors that has significantly optimised the opening and closing times of their doors/gates. The Dutch company now also carries, for example, high-speed doors and gates in the range which comprise a sturdy plastic curtain with speeds of up to 2 m/s. In times of increasing responsibility and not least high energy prices, more and more companies from industry and logistics are relying on this energy-efficient and time-saving solution. Because especially in autumn and winter external doors and gates that are left open for too long can become cost traps for companies. Cold air gets in while warm air escapes and the heating starts up to balance the temperature.
The special doors and gates comprise a very sturdy plastic curtain and drive and control technology which permits high opening cycles as well as opening and closing speeds. There is also a choice of protective covers made from plastic, galvanised steel and stainless steel. Like traditional roller shutters, the high-speed doors and gates are rolled up on a shaft at the lintel. They open and close automatically, are safe for users and space-saving and quiet. Another advantage is the attractive price-performance ratio as well as the broad application area. For instance, the high-speed doors and gates are used not only in industry and logistics, but also in the pharmaceuticals and chemicals industry, the automotive industry, retail, as well as the food industry. The company stocks a customised solution for almost every situation.
Depending on the type, the high-speed doors and gates are available up to a maximum width of 6000 millimetres and with areas from 9 to 36 square metres. The portfolio ranges from high-speed roller doors and gates specially for the indoor area to high-speed roller doors and gates for the indoor and outdoor area through to robust high-speed folding doors and gates which can be fitted on the outside of an office building.
Energy-saving door drives
Door drives have a decisive impact on whether a door is energy-efficient or not. The exhibitor Berner Torantriebe has dealt intensively with this topic and in a sample calculation indicates that the installation of power-saving drives is more worthwhile than ever before. Apart from the sustainability aspect, the main focus of the calculation is ultimately more and more on the costs of the day-to-day operation.
“We compiled the calculation using the example of our GA203 door drive”, reports Frank Kiefer, Manging Director of Berner Torantriebe. The sample calculation determined that a traditional door drive with transformer and power consumption of roughly 6 watts generated annual operating costs of at least 20 euros.” The GA203 energy-optimised system from the Rottenburg-based company gets by with less than two euros per year with the same number of movement cycles.
The other door drives of the manufacturer are also now completely designed for economical energy consumption. “Swing and sliding door drives in our DA and C series work with power-saving switching power supplies, which consume less than 0.5 watts in standby mode. If light is required for the operation of the door or gate, we only use efficient LED technology”, adds Frank Kiefer. The power requirement of a door or gate also greatly depends on the ease of operation. The materials used – like aluminium and PA6 plastic for the rollers of the entrance gates of Berner – guarantee optimal functioning, durability and thus also sustainability.
International know-how
The ACMI (Assocostruttori Chiusure Meccanismi Italia) will also be at R+T 2024 in Stuttgart. Nicola Fornarelli, President of the ACMI: “Thanks to the Italian commercial agency ITA, our association was able to start an export promotion project for small and medium-sized companies.” The ACMI joint pavilion was at the world’s leading trade fair for roller shutters, doors/gates and sun shading systems for the first time in 2015 with eight companies on 100 square metres. In 2024 twenty of the member companies will welcome visitors on approximately 1100 square metres. “Our partnership with Landesmesse Stuttgart is extremely relevant for us from a strategic perspective. For our member companies R+T is definitely the most important trade fair in our industry”, adds Nicola Fornarelli. “All exhibitors of the ACMI pavilion are really looking forward to presenting their latest products in the area of doors and gates live to the expert public.”
About R+T
For over 50 years, companies have been presenting their innovations and demonstrating their solutions for the key topics in the industry at R+T, the world’s leading trade fair for roller shutters, doors/gates and sun shading systems. During the trade fair or at one of the numerous evening events, R+T provides an opportunity to exchange ideas and opinions with colleagues, and is the ideal platform for intensive technical discussions. Several specialist forums and network events ensure that contacts are forged and give participants new impetus for their daily work. As the world’s leading trade fair, R+T is at the same time a meeting point for the sector, a trend barometer and an innovation platform. The next R+T will be held from 19 to 23 February 2024.
With the Federal Association for Manufacturers of Roller Shutters and Sun Shading Systems (BVRS), the National Federation of Door and Gate Manufacturers (BVT) and the Industrial Association for Technical Textiles, Roller Shutters and Sun Shading Systems (ITRS), R+T can count on the support of strong partners who ensure market orientation. A large number of associations and institutions, e.g. the European Solar Shading Organisation (ES-SO) and ift Rosenheim, are involved in R+T and actively help to shape the accompanying programme.
1,025 exhibitors (2015: 888) from all over the world presented their products and services in Stuttgart in 2018. 774 of these exhibitors came from abroad. The 65,500 national and international visitors (2015: 59,057) came from more than 140 countries. A total of 38,706 visitors came from abroad (2015: 59,057). They spent an average of 2.1 days (2015: 2 days) discovering the innovations and trends at R+T in detail.
